Pascal's Globel Wager

The above wager chart might look somewhat familiar to you; in essence it is an environmental spin off of the traditional Pascal's Wager chart for belief in God. This argument for global warming is one I used last week when talking to a friend, and today I see it again in my Environmental Geology class, kind of cool to see that I am ahead of the trend there.

Anyway, with out getting into it too much I would just urge you to look over the chart above and tell me what you think, if you agree but think it lacks, please keep in mind that it is simplistic, and could be much more "wordy", please let me know. If you disagree, please let me know.

sick and tired

So it is November 7th, and minus a few minor problems I was able to get out and vote. Every time there is an election I get this sick feeling in my stomach. I have decided that I do not want to vote anymore. I do not like my options... I never really feel good about what I am doing, and then I finally make a decision and later regret it, or am made to regret it. The only person I voted for that I really felt good about, and still feel good about has a whopping 3% of the vote. Yay for my vote!

So I was talking with someone about voting and important issues when it comes being Catholic. I understand the importance of establishing a pro-life platform as the basis for change. That makes sense to me, I agree. However, sometimes I have a hard time resolving voting pro-life when the candidate that says s/he is pro-life does not really seem like that great of a person, or their voting history calls their claims into question. Or, what about the candidate that are pro-life but not for anything else that I care about? How do you resolve these issues? How should I?

I have a notion in my head, and it seems to be growing more and more recently, that the American mentality on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is really out of focus. I do not think the mindset of our country is anywhere near where it needs to be in order for change to take place. Pro-life in a pro-death country, how can change take place when everything about our country seems to be focused on preserving and moving against positive change?

Because Matt asked so nicely,

So it has been awhile since I last blogged... yeah so what... want to fight about it?

Anyway, life has been really increasingly busy for me. It seems as life slows down for Emily with the end of CC it picks up for me in the areas of work and school.

First of all School. Well, classes are getting a little rougher, the homework load is picking up, but overall it is still light; however, my Modern Chinese History class continues to be bothersome. Last Tuesday we were in class for 15 minutes before someone came by to post on the door that class was canceled, didn't even bother to come in and tell us though. It is really sad because I was really hoping to ask her (my professor) a few questions about our major presentation assignment that is due next week. We do not have a rubric for it, and the syllabus says little to nothing at all about it as well. So on the bright side no class, negative side, I have no idea what the heck I need to do for my homework for next week, oh and I had to wake up for nothing. Another school related note, I might just be here for a full 5 years. That would be quite a kick in the wallet, but hey the loans are deferred right?

Second, Work. All of my jobs are pretty easy, nothing too hard at all really. The RA gig on the other hand is proving to be quite a challenge this year. It is not because of the residents, for the most part they are good, some of the people I work with however are getting to me. The lack of organization is increasing, and so is my stress level. I would like to vent about it, but I cannot really on here due to the somewhat public nature of my blog, and the off chance that some of these people might read it. If you want to know more though just ask.

Third, almost time to vote. November 7th is quickly approaching and I am going to need to decide whom I am voting for soon. The only real election that I am sure which way I am voting on is the Senate race, Fitzgerald gets my vote. The other races? I really do not know. I do not really want to vote for the Right, but the Left is looking no better. I mean, in my eyes, the ends are just getting further and further apart and I am looking for someone in the middle; so where do I go? I almost want to go vote at home because then I can vote against Bachmann; she is just insane. When all is said and done though, I still do not know who to vote for. One of my residents keeps telling my about this MPR thing that will match my views to candidates, maybe I should give that a try.

Forth, Wedding Planning. So the wedding is getting closer and closer and Emily and I are doing more and more. We have a general lay out for the invites, we just need the paper and a new font and we are set (minus actually construction of these things). We are starting to look into retreat and NFP classes as well. Last weekend we went out with Josh and Gina to talk about some of that. It was a good night too, we went to the Chatterbox pub; a nice little restaurant with s pretty good menu and the ability to play games at your table, and we played apples to apples. Overall though we are starting to make progress again which is a good thing.

That is about it I think. I will write again sooner or later. As always comments are welcome.

Modern China History

Exact quote from my Chinese History professor (She is from China).

"Am I supposed to touch it?" *crash* "ope, guess no"

That combined with her inability to figure out the technology of the classroom is going to make this class very long.

An Update

This is an update on a blog I wrote last year about girls and laundry. This is an exact quote from a freshman female as she walked to the elevator... "Guess what"..."My laundry didn't change colors when I washed it!"..."I only had to call my mom three times".

The theory stands firm!

The start of the year

Well so far I have had only one class, and it was not too bad. Environmental Geology, should be ok I guess. Tomorrow I will have my first class in block 2 educations, as well as my first experience with History of Modern China. Both should be good; I hope.

All of my residents have moved in now, and they all seem to be pretty good. Last night was the brother-sister floor program and that went really well, speed meeting and pizza. After it was over some of my residents showed me how to play this really odd game using a pool table and two pool balls. It involves sliding one of the balls at the other, once they connect the process starts again with the next person, and if they can not hit the ball before it stops moving they get a letter till they spell a word then they are out and the game goes on without them in the rotation. The word in question was d-a-v-e I am not sure if it is named such for the inventor or not. But it was fun even if I did not do it justice in the explanation.

Besides that I am doing my first desk shift of the year... I have a lot of these this year. I am going to be working a ton so I guess I should get used to it.

Food, and New People

Ok, so something I ate last night was oh so delicious, but oh so bad for me. I woke up this morning with what I suspect was food poisoning. I have spent most of the day sleeping and running back and forth between my room and the bathroom... not a pretty picture I know, but you didn't have to live through it, and let me tell you, that was not too much fun either.

On a different note, sophomores have started moving back... good times... so far everyone seems ok... Only two people from my class are still in the building, but that is ok I suppose.

Welcome/Good Bye

Well the waiting game is over. The school year is almost starting up and it's shaping up to be a very busy year. Between block 2 of my education classes, which I am taking with a friend and co-worker, Squiggles, and getting the last of my generals done classes should be quite challenging. Outside of class I am working A LOT this semester. Between the Grace Desk and The UV Cafe I am going to be working something like 24 hours a week. Throw wedding planning in there and my RA responsibilities and it is going to be busy to say the least. But I am still looking forward to it.

My boss (from the RA job) has just left too, so this year should be even more hectic because of that. But I am happy for him. He got a great job working on the island of St. Kitts, in the Caribbean, at a University that is going to have on campus housing for the first time. So he is creating their Res Life department from the ground up so to say. The job also meant a HUGE raise for him as well as a chance of a life time to get a wonderful experience. And who knows, he might be back some day.

The new boss just moved in today though, his name is Drew, and both he and his wife (I forgot her name, something with a D as well) seem very nice, and even though he could never replace Keith, he might not be too bad at all. Overall it will be a new experience for everyone involved.

Besides that, I have one week of training to go till move in weekend and all the fun begins. I can't wait... well kind of... but I am still looking forward to it.

this needs to be posted

jpfizzlebottom: his yesticles would hurt

jpfizzlebottom: brb

Livinlargetommie: ok

jpfizzlebottom: k

jpfizzlebottom: my dad had to tell a funny story

Livinlargetommie: ok

Livinlargetommie: that took a while

Livinlargetommie: what was it about?

jpfizzlebottom: yeah

jpfizzlebottom: some of his buddies when they were younger

jpfizzlebottom: 3 of em

jpfizzlebottom: they're out around

jpfizzlebottom: midnight

jpfizzlebottom: decided to go to white castle

jpfizzlebottom: they get there and as they walk in they pass these guys

jpfizzlebottom: when they get to the clerk he's all pasty white and shaking

jpfizzlebottom: they ask him whats wrong

jpfizzlebottom: he says the guys who were just in here always come in and mess with him

jpfizzlebottom: throw things

jpfizzlebottom: shove him around

jpfizzlebottom: stuff like that

jpfizzlebottom: so one of my dad's buddies heads outside

jpfizzlebottom: his names

jimjpfizzlebottom: the other friends with him are kevin and al

jpfizzlebottom: so jim, kevin and al are outside

jpfizzlebottom: the other guys are in their car

jpfizzlebottom: jim walks up and taps on the window

jpfizzlebottom: guy kinda gives an eyeball, gives him the brd

jpfizzlebottom: bird*

jpfizzlebottom: so he pounds on the window

jpfizzlebottom: guy flips him off again

jpfizzlebottom: so he punches through the window

jpfizzlebottom: and pulls the guy out of his car

jpfizzlebottom: start wailing on him

jpfizzlebottom: telling him to leave the kid inside alone

jpfizzlebottom: kevin and al are just standing there

jpfizzlebottom: the other guy gets out of the car

jpfizzlebottom: passenger

jpfizzlebottom: he runs around to the front and starts doing all this karate shit

jpfizzlebottom: kevin's like oh fu**

jpfizzlebottom: jim sees him and stops beating on the one guy and walks toward the karate guy

jpfizzlebottom: the karate guy try to like jump kick him

jpfizzlebottom: jim grabs him in the air and slams him to the ground

jpfizzlebottom: so he's got both of these guys on the ground and they hear sirens

jpfizzlebottom: so they run

jpfizzlebottom: the hide out at some guys house

jpfizzlebottom: wait awhile

jpfizzlebottom: decide its ok to head outside

jpfizzlebottom: couples blocks down they're spotted by some cops and are arrested

jpfizzlebottom: so everyone is at the jail

jpfizzlebottom: it all kinda gets worked out

jpfizzlebottom: no one presses charges

jpfizzlebottom: word against word sort of thing

jpfizzlebottom: so

jpfizzlebottom: a few weeks later jim gets a dui

jpfizzlebottom: he has to go in for his one weekend

jpfizzlebottom: he's heading to jail from work

jpfizzlebottom: so he calls al and kevin and asks them to bring him some clothes while he's in there

jpfizzlebottom: so he doesn't have to wear his nice dress clothes

jpfizzlebottom: so they're gonna meet him at the jail

jpfizzlebottom: they decide they're going t fuck with him

jpfizzlebottom: they get him these huge clown shoes

jpfizzlebottom: like

jpfizzlebottom: green tight plaid pants

jpfizzlebottom: and like a pink floral shirt

jpfizzlebottom: so he has this rediculous outfit on and he has to spend the weekend in

jailjpfizzlebottom: and he's a big guy

jpfizzlebottom: so he looks crazy

jpfizzlebottom: when he's walking into the jail

jpfizzlebottom: one of the guys who he beat up sees him

jpfizzlebottom: he kinda freaks out and starts telling everyone not to fu** with him because he's probably crazy

jpfizzlebottom: first he punched like him

jpfizzlebottom: and now he's dressed like that

jpfizzlebottom: so when he gets in all the big guys in the jail are like introducing themselves

jpfizzlebottom: shaking his hand

jpfizzlebottom: cuz they think he's some big crazy guy and they want to be on his good side

jpfizzlebottom: thats it

Livinlargetommie: ok

Its been some time

So Emily and I bought a car the other day. Brand new, kind of scary but nothing can be done now, and I don't think I would want anything done about it anyway. The summer is still going well. So far the most eventful thing has been the car, other than that I am going camping with the Novak family in a week and then there is a family gathering for Cindy's side of the family as well as Brian and Cindy's 26th anniversary party and a house warming party for a friend of mine named Becky. Other than that life is pretty slow. Work is going well. The other week we had 680 nuns on campus and that was kind of... intense... old women can be awe full needy.

I am looking forward to school starting again. This year is going to be much busier than the past years have been. I am working a lot and I have some pretty rigorous classes as well. I am going to need to be a lot more disciplined this year that's for sure.

Anyway that's life, leave a comment if you want, or a suggestions for what to write about.

Let It Be

It is lonely at school. I want summer to be done.

Tuesday, June 06, 2006

Are there any vending machines?

So it has been a little while since the last time that I posted anything, but it has been a busy few weeks, so that’s my excuse. In any case classes finished out well, I ended up with two B+ a B and a B- overall not too bad in my opinion; next semester should be better though, I am back in Education Classes and I should enjoy them a little bit more and do a little better.

Summer is going well, I am working 8-4 Monday through Friday at St. Thomas on the Summer Conference Staff, and basically we are a hotel type house keeping staff. We clean up dorms and apartments, set them for conferences, and then when they are done we clean them up and get them ready for the next group. Overall the job is not too bad, the pay is a little low but the people I work with are nice and I get free housing to make up for it.

On that note I am living in Selby this summer. It is the newest building on campus (only open for one year now) so my room is pretty nice. My roommates are pretty nice too; I am living with 3 other guys: Josh, Erik, and Fabian. Josh is a pretty cool guy but never really around because he is living at home, Fabian is just an all around fun/funny character, and he is around more and more after being evicted from Ireland Hall. Erik... well he is pretty nice I guess and according to what he, and another person have said, is pretty ocd about cleaning... well in my short experience I will say this... for someone who is ocd about cleaning... he sure leaves a heck of a mess in our kitchen. Overall though it is not too bad, no one steals my food so that’s good at least.

Besides that I am just living as normal, seeing Emily less which sucks a lot, but I guess it could be worse. So yeah... I guess that’s it, and I will leave you all with the words of a man that checked in not too long ago: "It is governments that cause problems, we are all just living next to each other with no problems, I mean you don't see neighbors preemptive bombing each other cause there will be teenagers soon do you?"

3 down, 1 to go!

I am almost done for the year, I just finished my third of four finals and turned in my last paper for the year; it was on economic policy in climate change. Finite is all that is left, and a take home test for the same class. I will be done sometime today with prep, I am hoping by a reasonable time as well 8-9 tonight. Then I have the evening off, my last test tomorrow morning at 10:30 followed by my last duty night of the year tomorrow night. It should be good times. When it is all over and done I start work on Monday, turns out I could actually start anytime after tomorrow; that’s how much they need help. But I think I am going to wait till at least Sunday to start because I am going home Saturday for spring fest. Anyway, I know this was kind of dull and autobiographical, but I am done... Hope the end of the year went well for everyone, and congrats to Matt on his Georgetown graduation!

Days like this keep me warm.

Today is such a beautiful day! I love days like today. Warm, sunny, smells like spring (but my allergies are not acting up), it is just wonderful.

On that note I finished 2 of my 4 finals today, Human Geography and Christian Morality down, Micro Econ and Finite left. The rest of my week is pretty busy; I need to write some stuff and do a take home test, not to mention study for the two remaining finals. Overall though so far so good and I am not worried too much. Ah well, that’s about it in my exiting life for now.

Oh, points if you can get the song reference in the title.

Welcome to the work force!

So I am working at the Grace Desk right now, or the gdesk for short. While I spend 5 hours here every Monday I thought that it might be nice to get something productive done. Today’s agenda is my homework, performance review, and laundry. The first one I have not started, the second I thought about, and the third I am almost done with. While I was working my way through the laundry something quite peculiar came to mind... this might be the first generation of ladies that does not know how to do laundry.

When I came to school last year I only had a vague idea of how to run the washer and dryer, and after a call home I got everything worked out with what goes where and which buttons I should push. This year when I was doing my laundry I watched a male freshman do his laundry by putting the soap and dirty clothes into a dryer and then sit there for an hour and watch it, only to wonder why nothing really happened. In short, I understand that young men might not know how to do laundry at all. But that has been the general tone of America for the last few generations.

Now, as I work on my laundry in the woman’s dorm it occurred to me that the force of change from woman in the household to woman in the work place might have some adverse affects.

When I went to put my laundry into the washer I found it full of lint... I am not even sure how that is possible. After washing my clothes I put them into a dryer, which was also full of lint. Upon inspecting the lint trap I discovered the source of the problem; it looked as if it had not been cleaned in 20 or so loads. I pulled off 4 handfuls of lint and then needed to try and get the excess out of the collection receptacle. After this I noticed two lint traps that were outside the dryers while they were running and lastly, I watched a young lady act dumbfounded after her new white shirt was turned a rosy shade of pink.

Now I am not saying that woman belong in the home and not in the workplace; that is actually the furthest thing from my mind. I am just a little curious about who is going to be doing the laundry when all of us young college kids grow up, or are we all going to be wearing varying shades of pink and expecting the dryer to do its job and the washers too.

Worst Day Ever--Period--For me.

So my day today started at 4:30am when I was awoke by a knock on my door... Guess who was at the door? I should actually say what was at the door. A Tsunami... bet you were not going to say that.

A tsunami for all of you who do not know is a prank which involves you filling up a trash can with water and leaning it against someone’s door. When you open your door the Water pours into your room. This particular tsunami was something like 4-5 gallons of water I would guess. So at 4:30am I started to clean my room and try and soak up all of the water... I eventually returned to bed around 8:00am only to get up again at 9:00am to take an econ test... The test, ironically, was the high point of the day. I think I did quite well, but time will tell.

After the test I spent my afternoon working franticly on homework for Theology which I was planning on doing some of before the test... but we know how that turned out. So tired, and frustrated, I went to class.

After Theology I have Arithmetic, and I got my test back and that was another wonderful event to add to my day. Worst grade on a test for math that I have yet to get... the lowest score is dropped though, so at least that is good. I ditched the rest of class because I was ready for the day to be done.

Dinner was good. The food was decent but the company and conversation was good. On my way back from dinner I was feeling pretty good and even able to laugh slightly at the misfortunes of my day. As I walked back to my room I heard about a game of basketball that was going to happen at 6:15pm. So I, exited to play ball with people for once, I had been trying to play all week but no one was ever there, went over to the gym. Nothing. I was a little angry about the lack of people, but I shot around for a while than committed myself to an elliptical runner for a while.

Eventually people showed up to play, maybe my night was taking a turn for the best. I could not have been more wrong. We started playing a game of 4 on 4 and I was doing pretty well, all of the time I had put into practicing for the last few weeks was looking like it way paying off! I was thinking this day was not so bad again.

Ten minutes into the game it happened. There was a turnover and I was heading down court with my boss Mike when he sent a bounce pass to me because we had a 2 on 1 going in our advantage. This bounce pass was really sloppy and low, and when I went to try and recover it from a few inches off of the ground it happened.

The first time my finger impacted the ball it was a few inches off of the ground this jammed my finger. The second time my finger impacted the ball was when the ball hit the ground. At this point I felt that like I had jammed my finger and it hurt, a lot. The ball rolled out of bounds and the game stopped as I turned around, and to my surprise, my finger was pointing in three different directions.

After this happened I went out of the gym to the lobby and Mike, so graciously, called public safety. He was also nice enough to get me some ice for it as well. When public safety arrived they took my information and gave me the options I had: a taxi voucher to the hospital, or a friend could take me. Not wanting to wait for a taxi Merlin offered to take me to the E-Center near School. Merlin, for those that do not know, which is probably most of you, is the hall chaplain for my hall and our sister hall.

When we got to the E-Center I filled out some paperwork and played a back and forth game over the phone with my dad to get my insurance information. It was a short wait till I was let in for x-rays and after that I was led out to the lobby to wait because all the rooms were full.

Now, for the past hour or so since it happened my finger was in shock and I did not really feel to much, at least not anything more that a dull throbbing. However, at this point, in the lobby of the E-Center, the throbbing turned to waive after waive of pain.

After a half hour or so of waiting in pain I was let into the examination room where the doctor, who told me he had never straitened a finger before, prepped my finger and gave me two shots of Novocain, which was actually more painful than when he reset my finger. After I was nice and numb the doctor pulled on my finger and pushed it back into place. I did not feel this at all, which, all things considered was most excellent.

Once my finger was strait again I was x-rayed once again, and finally allowed to go after receiving a splint and a prescription for vicatin. When all was said and done I dislocated my finger in 2 places. It could have been worse, I was lucky, I know that.

Now my day is finally drawing to an end, and I am writing this and then going to bed... while the drugs lull me to sleep. That was my day, and all things considered it has been the worse one this year by far.

On the bright side, my carpet is finally dry.

Some decisions.

Well, I registered for my second block of education classes the other day, so it looks like I will be sticking with it, for better or worse. The end of the year is fast approaching, and I am looking forward to summer and staying on campus. I decided to take the job that paid less that I would for sure like. The end of the year is wrapping up now, and I am wondering, what plans does everyone have for the summer? Trips? Jobs? Etc.?

Sick.... AGAIN!!!

So yeah I am sick again. I have not been "well" for more than one month at time this year. Every time I tern around it's bam! Sick. I have had the whole nine yards. Strep. Ear infection. Colds. Pink eye. Mono. It just keeps going on and on. I do not know how much more I can put up with, or for how much longer. This is annoying to say the least.

Can I do it.

Recently I have begun to really think about my career path; is teaching my calling? I would love to teach, I do not doubt that for a second. But as I go through my classes I do not feel that I demonstrate a passion for the subject matter. For example, I wanted to be a history teacher, but I just do not express the love or care for history that I feel a history teacher should have. I do not go out of my way to read history, and in my classes I find myself lacking in the studding and reading department. The same goes for economics, I thought I would do that; low and behold that it too bores me. So what do I teach? Am I passionate enough about any subject to teach it? If not, should I even be considering teaching? And if not teaching, then what?

I know lots of questions, but it has been on my mind.

TN the trip home.

So last week was spring break and Emily and I, along with our friend Becky drove down to TN. That is an intense drive. I have never been on a road trip more than 5 hours before in a car, and this killed that old recorded. Killed it. So yeah, I do not know how willing I am going to be to spend a lot of time in a car in the near future, but overall it was a good experience. And I got to drive a stick shift which I only do in a blue moon.

The time in TN was good though, we went to a museum, and to the mountains, almost to the tallest point in the smoky's but it was closed till the 30th (the road) and we did not feel like walking for 7miles to get there. We also went hiking, and my only comment on that is this, if something says a short loop through the park, be weary of it. Very weary. The last thing we did before we came back was spending a night in a cave, now I will admit I had my doubts a little, but the tours were great, we explored the caves and crawled through all kinds of cracks and crevices, and we also went out onto the worlds second largest underground lake; stocked with rainbow trout. The size of this great lake was however somewhat deceptive, with a name like the lost sea and worlds second largest I was left expecting something more than we experiences. I was left very disappointed with the size of the lake.

The trip was a good one overall; I would do it again easy. Maybe next year Jeff and Erin will come see us.

Tennessee (Emily's post)

So my attempt at a smart post didn't go over so well. Ah well, if you want, continue (or start) to comment on it. I won't be posting for about a week, since I'm going to Tennessee for spring break and probably won't be at a computer much. I am looking forward to this trip, except for the part where we sleep in a cave...what is wrong with people? Who actually thinks that that is fun?

SNOW DAY

I am in college and I have a snow day. Emily too.

Friday Night

It is friday night, and what am I doing? Sitting in my room writing a blog. How sad. It is not that I do not want to do anything, it is just that there is nothing to do. I could go out with some kids I know to a party, but I am not really a party type of person, so what does that leave me with... my room, my tv, a book, a computer, and tea... good old tea... looks like its a dull Friday night for me.

My 8th grade classes

Well, school is kind of dull this semester my classes are not too bad in general, even if they are 8th grade classes, or so I am told. The lineup looks like this: Finite Mathematics, Microeconomics, Human Geography, and Christian Morality. I personally do not think my semester is too much like 8th grade, but then again generals are more like high school plus, well at least for some of them (cough....math....cough). Life is good otherwise, last night Emily and I went to the Wild game and had a good time there. There was a moment of silence for Kirby which was really nice. The best part about the night was wear our seats were... now you have to understand that we got these tickets free from TCF bank, Emily won them, and wow... we had... and this is not an exaggeration, the farthest back seats possible, we were not even in the stands, we were at some bar like thing overlooking the stands overlooking the rink... it still had a good view, but wow... the absolute furthest back that you can get. Anyway that’s what’s going on right now, look for more info later.

New link

The link to the story for the missing viedo from earlier is here at CBS and the video is available on that page as well but I am having trouble getting it to load so you might just have to go on the story (not as much impact, but still good).

Hell Week

Well, im getting closer to the end of this week. 3 tests and a short paper. The paper and math test are done, econ is up here in a few minutes and Geography will be happening tomorrow morning. Overall though, most of the tests should not be too bad, it is just kind of overwhelming to have them all in one week. That is it for now I suppose, I will write at the end of the week, till then wish me luck.

Every bit as good

People with autism are just as capable as anyone else.

Math

I have decided that I do not like math, it is dumb. Well I suppose math is not dumb, but I would much rather not have to do it. On the bright side though, once I get through this math class I am more or less done with math classes for the rest of my life!!! which makes me very exited. Anyway, tomorrow is a test day, so I have to get all of my homework done.

A 3rd attempt

This is the 3rd time I have made an attempt at a blog... well maybe 5th if you count the live journals from way back in the high school days... but if you do not this is the 3rd. My mission statement quite frankly is to just post. I have tried the life posts and I have tried the thought provoking ones... I guess my mission then is to just write. So stop in from time to time to see what I have written. It may be worth your while, perhaps not.
